Budget 2010: Default retirement age may be scrapped

(Updated) The chancellor has said Labour will review the default retirement age.

by William Robins on Mar 24, 2010 at 14:53

Alistair Darling has promised to review the default retirement age by either scrapping it or offering greater flexibility to those over 65.

Current rules give employers the right to force a man aged 65 or a woman aged 60 to leave work and the government has already announced it would gradually increase the state pension age from 65 in 2024 to 68 in 2046 - and 65 for women by 2020.

However, many older people need to work beyond 65 due to insufficient pension funds and many want the chancellor to go further.

The government had previously stated that it had no plans to scrap forced retirement but comments from deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman re-ignited the debate and the party pledged a review.

Last month PricewaterhouseCoopers called for a more radical lift to 70 by 2046.

John Hawksworth, head of macro economics at PwC said: ‘We weren’t expecting a change this close to the election but it has announced a review which is what we were calling for, so hopefully they will look at this again soon.’

Welcome to Communist England where you retire at HM Gov pleasure - when they tell you and you get what they decide to give you.

This socialist lot want to implement the Bulgarian regime - you work till you drop.

Retirees are provided with a blue overall - and white headgear and HAVE to tend the public parks roads and buildings to earn their state handout/credit. This is Browns utopia - absolute control.

If you have a scrap of dignity and self worth don't vote for Labour in May.

If you cannot gain decent gainful employment in your fifties having been made redundant how on earth are you meant to get back into the workforce with a decent wage & able to save for retirement at 65+ ?

We as a country are sleepwalking to the ABYSS.......we have too many people here in UK & millions of people from the new EU states working for wages which were paid in the nineties......£20,000 a year in LONDON is not a lot of money. We as a country cannot afford to be a socialist utopia for the feckless, the reckless & the shirkers & deliberate mass produced one parent families......FRANK FIELD the well respected LABOUR MP was asked by BLAIR to look at reforming the welfare budget...He did THE GRANDIOSE LABOUR GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT LISTEN..........

They have just reduced the number of years required to get a pension to 30 years national insurance contributions.

I am sure that all these EU labourers 45+ will want a full old age state pension & THEN WORK ON THE SIDE CASH IN HAND .............................& asylum seekers also.

Get rid of this inefficient, gutless motley crew come election day. Vote for any part but LABOUR..PLEASE!!!

Gordon Brown has taken nearly £100 billion from private pensions, if that money had been allowed to grow, by the time people retire in 30 or 40 years the difference between what they would have had, and what they will have will be closer to

£1 trillion collectively.

Brown himself will retire on a pension that we have to pay of over £150,000 per year.

"Opportunites for the many, not the few".

A working man under a Labour government will remain a working man until the day he dies, because he'll never be able to afford to retire.

So if everyone works an extra few years where's the work coming from? If there's no extra work, does it mean unemployment for younger people? can anyone over 65 who can't get a job claim unemployment benefit?

Ken the Pen is right; the real problem is over population by immigrants taking British jobs and siphoning off our hard earned tax money in benefits.
