FTSE 100 and mid-caps hit new highs in global rally

UK markets have continued to scale fresh highs, as a global market rally continues to gather steam.

The FTSE 100 climbed to a new all-time high of 7,714 in the morning's trading, while the FTSE 250 index of medium-sized companies notched up its own milestone, up 0.4% at 20,894.

Records have been tumbling overseas too. Yesterday in the US, the Dow Jones crossed the 25,000 mark for the first time, while the broader S&P 500 index hit a new all-time high. In Japan, the Nikkei is trading near 26-year highs.

Utilities helped to power the FTSE 100's latest push, after a bullish note from analysts at Credit Suisse. Centrica (CNA) was up 2% at 144.6p while United Utilities (UU) rose 1.4% to 810.6p on upgrades.

On the FTSE 250, military electronics maker Ultra Electronics (ULE) bucked the bullish mood, falling 7.8% to £12.81 as the Financial Times reported a delay to the UK government's defence review.
