Imperial College gives students £100,000 to invest

Imperial College Business School is putting its students’ investment management skills to the ultimate test with the launch of a fund under their control.

The Imperial College Business School Student Investment Fund has been seeded with £100,000 from the college’s endowment. It will be managed by seven MSc students from Imperial College’s Investment and Wealth Management and Financial Accounting programmes.

Imperial College hopes the fund will provide aspiring City analysts and fund managers with practical skills, in tandem with their degree curriculums. Working with external companies could also help ambitious students to build relationships with potential future employers.

The fund will invest in a range of listed companies across Europe and will be supported by a faculty-led investment committee, chaired by financial econometrics professor Walter Distaso.

The students can also call on industry professionals for advice. They include Wei Victor Li of JP Morgan Asset Management, who manages the JPM Systematic Alpha fund and is head of equity and alternative beta research at the firm. He is likely to be joined by others from JP Morgan Asset Management, who are yet to be confirmed.

Profits made by students from their investments will be reinvested back into the fund.

Jonathan Fielding, a current MSc Investment and Wealth Management student and co-chief executive of the fund, said: ‘The fund focuses on equipping students with skills necessary to be successful as an equity analyst, quantitative research analyst or asset manager.’

50/50 Terry/Nick split seems to be the consensus on here. The intelligent investor might have a few more ideas though.
