Income Wharrier leaves BlackRock for Troy

Troy Asset Management has beefed up its equity income team by poaching BlackRock's Mark Wharrier to be an assistant manager on its popular £3.5 billion Trojan Income fund.

Wharrier (pictured) is Citywire AA-rated for his work on BlackRock UK Inco me, a £412 million fund he had run since 2013 with Adam Avigdori. The pair were joined by David Goldman in 2015, who will remain a co-manager.

At Troy he will work with Francis Brooke, who also holds a Citywire AA rating for his performance on Trojan Income, which ranks fourth out of 96 UK Equity Income funds with a three-year total return of 37.8% to the end of May.

This is just ahead of BlackRock UK Income, which ranks sixth with a 35.7% total return, according to Lipper data on this website.

Wharrier will also work alongside Hugo Ure, manager of the £58 million Trojan Ethical Income fund. Ure in addition helps Brooke run the £229 million Troy Income & Growth Trust (TIGT ), although Wharrier will not be involved in the investment trust.

Wharrier was responsible for the UK equity portion of the former British Assets investment trust which Blackrock's Adam Ryan briefly ran as the BlackRock Income Strategies Trust before the group was sacked last year and replaced by Aberdeen Asset Management who have re-named it Aberdeen Diversified Income & Growth (ADIG ).

'The Troy UK equity income franchise has grown significantly in recent years and incorporates not only the Trojan Income Fund and the Troy Income & Growth Trust,' said Brooke.

'The addition of a third experienced fund manager will strengthen our team and both Hugo and I are delighted that Mark is joining us.'

'I have known Mark for many years and his investment approach and style is highly complementary to our own. He brings significant investment experience and has an excellent track record in managing UK equity income portfolios.'

Before BlackRock, Wharrier worked at NewSmith Asset Management and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, which he joined in 1994 when it was Mercury Asset Management.

Troy was founded by Sebastian Lyon, manager of its flagship Trojan fund and the ultra-defensive Personal Assets (PNL) investment trust. It grew to prominence after the financial crisis for its conservative investment style and desire to avoid permanent capital losses.

This is the second time the firm has hired an equity income fund manager. Three years ago it poached  James Harries, former manger of Newton Global Income, to launch its new Trojan Global Income fund.
