Investment Trust Insider: issue 25 out now!

Welcome to the first issue of Investment Trust Insider in 2016!

12 lessons of 2015

It’s been an inauspicious start to the year with China’s slowdown continuing to cast a shadow over the world economy and exposing the fragility of the UK’s mining-heavy FTSE All Share index. Yet there are reasons to be happy. As our review highlights, 2015 was a rough and tumble 12 months, but it could have been so much worse.

Investment trust investors will be pleased to see that 'closed-end' funds easily beat the stock market index return in the UK, Global, Europe and Japan sectors, although they fared less well in North America, Asia and Emerging Markets.

Of course for every winner there are losers ….

Investment trusts and climate change

For the small band of ‘green’ investment trusts last December’s Paris climate change conference was an early Christmas present, delivering an historic agreement that put global warming at the top of investors’ agendas.

Fund managers say if the targets set at ‘COP21’ are achieved they will shift the world to a low carbon economy over the coming decades. This article looks at the investments and performance of Impax Environmental Markets, Jupiter Green and Alliance Trust.

Asset allocation

How should investors position themselves for 2016? We speak to managers of three ‘multi-asset’ investment trusts which have the freedom to invest in asset classes such as bonds and property as well as equities (shares).
