Citywire Selection Verdict: Water, or lack of it, is predicted to be the most serious environmental challenge that the world will face in the near future. Just 2.5% of the world’s water is fresh and three quarters of that is contained in the ice caps. There are already more than a billion people without safe access to drinking water and with the world’s population growth and development of dietary habits that are more water-intensive the situation that only stands to get worse. At present, there are no active options that have proved consistent at exploiting this growing scarcity, which is why we include an exchange-traded fund that tracks the globe’s largest water companies.
