Multi-manager: Five wise men eye up 2013 stars

With so much investment uncertainty on the horizon, we asked five leading multi-managers, including John Chatfeild-Roberts (pictured), to pick out the funds they think are most likely to shine over the course of the next 12 months.

Selecting funds is not easy at the best of times, but in the present economic uncertainty it is especially tricky. Which funds do professional fund pickers like? We asked five of the best known multi-managers for their views.

Gary Potter, co-head of multi-manager funds at Thames River Capital, is bullish about equities.

‘2013 is likely to be a more positive year for risk assets, including equities, as some of the macro concerns dissipate,’ he said.

He picked Peter Kirkman’s JPM Global Consumer Trends , to express his bullish view. The fund’s investment themes are healthcare, changing demographics and demand for Western brands in emerging markets.

It has returned 16.3% over the past three years, under-performing the FTSE World’s 25.9%, but is well poised if there is a global recovery.

Far Eastern plays

Marcus Brookes (pictured), head of multi-manager at Cazenove Capital, said Europe and Japan were good value, but he is avoiding the US.

‘European and Japanese equity markets both face headwinds, but valuations are close to post-2009 lows, particularly when compared with the US,’ he said. To invest in Japan, he picked Stephen Harker’s GLG Japan Core Alpha .

John Chatfeild-Roberts, chief investment officer and head of the independent funds team at Jupiter, has also been adding to Asian equity exposure, and also believed Europe offered cheap opportunities. He has bought into Europe via AAA-rated David Dudding’s Threadneedle European Select .

John Ventre, portfolio manager at Skandia Investment Group, is looking to China. He agreed with Brookes that the US was overvalued.
