The funds wealth managers are backing for 2013

'Regular readers of Citywire Money know we provide two good sources of ideas of funds to invest in.

There's our Citywire Fund Manager Ratings, which identify the best fund managers in each sector from analysis of their performance data.

Then there's Citywire Selection, a list of over 100 funds recommended by our small team of analysts who choose them after analysing their performance and approach. Some of these funds are run by managers with a Citywire peformmance rating, some arre not.

But what are the investment professionals outside Citywire doing? We spoke to seven wealth managers, financial advisers and portfolio managers for their suggestions of funds to back in 2013.

The results were very interesting

A lot of mediocre also-rans in this selection!

All but one or two are bottom or middle ranking.

I'm glad they're backing these funds, because somehow I don't think I will be.

Even if these picks do well, it'll be a hell of a gamble.

Surely better to go with a consistently good performer?

Anon1, don't forget that funds that perform best in a recession/contraction phase do not perform so well in a recovery (even the early stages). There will ve a cyclic shift from income/defensive funds to more growth orientated funds. (and ditto ITs)

"However, the fact that it is domiciled in the Cayman Islands and denominated in US dollars makes it unsuitable for most private investors in the UK acting without a professional adviser." Can someone advise exactly what the point is here?

The European Investment Trust is the IT alternative to Edinburgh Partners European Opportunities Fund and a good choice for value investing - my choice for 2012
