Begg takes on two partners in expansion drive
by Rachael Revesz on Feb 01, 2013 at 09:08
Shrewsbury-based adviser Mark Begg is taking on two partners in his strategy to expand his firm’s client base.
Begg (pictured), who has operated as a one-man band for 13 years, is welcoming former schoolmate Keith Phillips and local adviser Philip Granger-Quinn to Mark Begg Asset Management.
He plans to ring-fence his client base, while Phillips will take a 40% stake in the new partnership as a senior partner, and junior partner Granger-Quinn will take a 20% stake. Both will start this Friday.
Granger-Quinn had previously attempted to set up his own business, following a stint at Shrewsbury firm Mortgage Port. ‘He tried to set up his own firm, but he didn’t have enough experience. Then he put his CV through my letter box,’ said Begg.
Begg said he persuaded Phillips to join the firm after several attempts to recruit him. ‘He had never taken the bait, but this time I offered him a partnership,’ said Begg.
He said he wanted the recruits to help power growth at the firm. ‘Looking around Shrewsbury, no-one was offering what I do – a combined financial planning and slick investment process – so there is fertile ground for expanding. But I didn’t want to do it on my own, as my time is committed to my existing clients.’
