Councillors will be denied access to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) under Conservative party plans.
The Tories believe that scrapping councillors’ pensions will save taxpayers an estimated £7 million a year.
According to the Taxpayers’ Alliance 4,548 councillors across the UK had signed up to the pension scheme by 2010-11.
Grant Shapps MP (pictured), chairman of the Conservative Party, said: ‘Our reforms will strengthen the integrity and independence of councillors, so that these local champions of the people are seen to stand up for the best interests of taxpayers, not the town hall state.'
Councillors were given access to the LGPS in 2003. .
