On the road diary: Winter wandering

Snaps from our travels around the UK (and further!) to see advisers between November 2016 and March 2017.

Madrid, November 2016

For a lot of advisers Mifid II means more compliance and regulation, but for me it meant a good reason to fly out to Spain. Speaking at a conference organised by Capital Group, I discussed the impact of the retail distribution review on the UK advice market, ably assisted by a team of translators.

The trip was nearly mired by an iPhone theft, but an 800-metre dash through Madrid city centre, followed by a middle-class telling off, led to the return of the expensive piece of kit.

Bournemouth, January 2017

At the end of January I went to Bournemouth, where I interviewed the Strategic Solutions team at the Hilton hotel for our ‘View from the Top’ page.

The view from the balcony would usually be superb, but blustery and grey conditions obscured the vista. It will come as no surprise to attendees of the Personal Finance Society’s Hants & Dorset meetings that Kevin Forbes’ flowing locks also caused significant photography headaches.

Glasgow, February 2017

Having featured Russell Davidson on our front cover, and learned about the extensive hotelier client book at Davidson Asset Management, it would have been rude not to arrange a breakfast meeting at Glasgow’s Malmaison.

Although Scotland faces a battle in its bid to qualify for the football World Cup, it would win a World Cup of breakfasts hands down.

Glasgow, February 2017

On the same day as the Breakfast Club, I headed over to the Wellington Wealth office in the centre of the city. Nicola and Jennifer Ellis are two of the most entertaining IFAs in the business, and this time around they explained their ‘Crafternoon Tea’ event for clients. Think afternoon tea combined with crafting.

The outcome of this event was this charming Duke of Wellington (complete with cone), and several other decorations. I am told that it also led to some valuable referrals, so hats off to the team for being creative with their client entertainment.

Belfast, March 2017

In March we were invited to speak at a series of roadshows, where we shared insights on some key IFA issues. This photo is taken from Belfast’s fantastic Culloden hotel, which has welcomed famous guests such as David Beckham, Lady Gaga and Robbie Williams, to name just a few.

Quorn, March 2017

Travelling to places such as Quorn is the meat and drink of the ‘On the Road’ team. The same can be said for coming up with bad puns.

In this elegant snap, Bhavna decided she would pretend to be a bartender. Sadly, this career turn would be short-lived, as we need her help with writing articles and meeting IFAs. In case the hotel owner somehow sees this, I can confirm that no beer was illegally consumed.

Liverpool, March 2017

This time around we are by the waterfront in Liverpool. Feeling the need to update social media of our whereabouts, we posed for the lovely selfie that you can see here. Bhavna and Leanne both display an aptitude for this, but my ‘lanky starfish’ pose is unlikely to catch on.
