Rotherham adviser remodels as life planner after Kinder course
by William Robins on Aug 12, 2011 at 07:00
Rotherham-based adviser Kevin Chalk plans to remodel Provest Financial Management as a life planning business after studying with George Kinder (pictured).
Chalk attended Kinder’s life planning course in June and hopes to become a registered life planner next year. He said he had tried life planning with Bill Bachrach and Maria Nemeth, but had found a new direction for his firm with the Kinder method.
‘Something was missing from the business,’ he said. ‘It is truly exciting. Previously I had done bits [of life planning], so signing the cheque for this [the course] was a big step.’
Chalk, who works alone, said he planned to hire a well-qualified paraplanner with aspirations to become a life planner, and would overhaul his back-office system. The biggest challenge would be pricing the new offer for existing and new clients, he said. ‘I will use this as the gateway for acquiring new clients.’

Silly boy. I hear lots of Kinder delegates are coming unstuck trying to 'sell' Life Planning. It might work in the US of A where everyone has a shrink, but not so in the UK. Use the soft skills that George teaches, but keep them up your sleeve! Don't go trying to sell it!
But hats off to George for getting Advisers to wake up to the 'softer side'! Use with caution.

I rest my case.
“A good example is a couple in their mid 50s who came to see me wanting to know if they had enough money for retirement. By posing thought-provoking questions and allowing them to talk about what they wanted to achieve from life, they became aware of unrealised goals. Exploring these, they began to understand that what they had always considered unachievable could become reality. One of them had always wanted to open an art gallery but thought it would remain just a dream. Something completely unrelated to her current employment. Through life planning sessions and an analysis of their finances with cash flow modelling, I helped them to see that it was realistic and we explored the question, “Would you rather look at your savings showing a balance of £1,000,000 or £950,000 while owning an art gallery?” Today, they are working towards opening their gallery. ”
So to those Advisers who sell their qualifications, performance figures, rates of return, product, pounds and tax law, tell me if your work brings out the above in your clients ?

Donald Shimoda - Perhaps use with great gusto and enthusiasm, as you may find "caution" is not the best environment to help clients be engaged.
The Kinder 5-day course is a revelation and well worth the time and money. Kevin Chalk is another successful example of how new skills can lift a business both financially and more importantly passionately.
Good luck Kevin. Any help or support don't hesitate to contact me.

Good luck Kevin. I am sure you will be really successful.
I was fortunate enough to meet you at the Global Life Planning Conference in January this year and was really struck by your energy and desire to do the best you can for your clients and by your great personal integrity. This seems to be a common factor amongst those who are adopting Life Planning.
For my part, Life Planning has enabled our business to go from strength to strength. The energy it has given me personally has been immense. It's difficult to get tired of the exhilaration I feel when clients leave our meetings thrilled and happy rather than just 'pleased with an efficient portfolio'. Nearly every week I have a client calling me to say "and I am now doing ...... . and it wouldn't have happened without you Luella and the process of Life Planning you have taken me through". My advice for what it's worth is - set out your proposition carefully, be great at what you do and Life Planning will certainly pay its way.
