Baillie Gifford CIO Smith gets Monks co-manager

Tom Walsh has been named deputy manager of Monks investment trust.

Walsh will assist Baillie Gifford chief investment officer Gerald Smith in running the £957 million portfolio.

He has worked at the Edinburgh-based asset manager since 2009, serving as as an investment manager in the UK equity team. Walsh has also held roles at Deloitte & Touche, Merrill Lynch and Fidelity International .

James Budden, director of marketing and distribution at Baillie Gifford & Co, said: ‘Tom will help Gerald Smith, the Monks manager, with the appraisal and selection of investments and assist with the important task of shareholder communication. 

‘RDR [the retail distribution review] is now in place and Baillie Gifford is committed to raising awareness of its investment trusts amongst intermediaries.’

Over three years, the trust's share price has risen 22.8%, while the net asset value has gained 19.6%, according to Citywire data.  Over the same stretch the FTSE World Index has climbed by 34.7%.
