Brewin Dolphin in double hire from Quilter and UBS
by Annabelle Williams on Aug 28, 2012 at 07:55
Brewin Dolphin has boosted its investment management and research teams with hires from rivals UBS Wealth Management and Quilter.
The team has poached UBS investment director Barney Hawkins for its Newcastle office alongside Ian Cooper from Quilter, who will bolster the firm’s closed-end research capability.
Hawkins, who has more than 20 years’ experience, will report into office head Charles May and is set to join the firm at the end of the year in an investment management role.
The Newcastle office is one of the firm’s largest in the north with around 19 divisional directors working in the branch. May said the hire was ‘testimony to the way the business is developing’.
May added: ‘We are absolutely delighted that someone of the experience of Barney is joining Brewin Dolphin.’
Elsewhere in Brewins, Cooper has joined the group’s closed-end research team, headed by John Newlands, as the business gears up for the retail distribution review and the opportunities it expects the regulation will present for investment trusts.
Newlands said: ‘The idea is to create enhancements from our service to our 600-plus client managers and to permit the generation of new detailed research, spearheaded by myself. This is all part of Brewin Dolphin’s preparations for the RDR, in which we see investment companies reaching a new audience and we want to be as prepared as possible for that.’
The firm allocates around £2.8 billion to investment companies and £6 billion to open-ended funds.
