Coutts names new investment head

Coutts has appointed Arne Hassel as head of investments.

He assumes the role from Gayle Schumacher (pictured), currently head of investment office, who is moving into a new role within the firm.

Hassel, who has over 25 years' experience, will be based in London and lead the international investment teams in London, Edinburgh, Zurich and Asia.

He joins from Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) in London, where he was most recently co-head multi-asset allocation. There, he was responsible for tactical asset allocation and advised the trustees on strategic asset allocation of the pension schemes, which has assets around £40 billion.

Prior to this, Hassel was head of global tactical asset allocation and multi-strategy at Millennium Global Investments.

He also had spells at Goldman Sachs Asset Management as head of global currency management and as head of the hedge fund strategies group in Europe and Asia.

Hassel will take up the role in April, and will report to Ian Ewart, head of products, services & marketing, who said in a statement: 'I am certain his [Hassel's] experience and knowledge will be key to capitalising on the excellent foundations of our enhanced investment proposition, which we have built over the past three years, to better meet the evolving needs of our clients.'

Schumacher has been appointed to a new role as managing director, future proposition design. In her new capacity, she will leverage her investment expertise to support the international development and future delivery of Coutts’ investment and advice propositions.

Ewart added: 'I would like to acknowledge Gayle’s outstanding contribution to our money management over the years and am pleased she has agreed to work with me on this exciting agenda, which is the design of the future propositions for Coutts, as we continue to develop an exceptional service.'
