Ex-Investec wealth strategy chief Wood-Smith joins Hawksmoor
by Danielle Levy on Oct 31, 2013 at 10:06
Hawksmoor Investment Management is to develop its direct private client with the hires of Investec Wealth & Investment's former chief strategist Jim Wood-Smith alongside investment manager Henry Rising.
The hires mark a significant step for the South-West based firm and will see Wood-Smith join as head of research, while Rising joins as an investment manager.
In an exclusive interview with Wealth Manager Wood-Smith (pictured) said he was planning to build on Hawksmoor's established investment process by expanding it to focus on direct securities as well as funds.
'I am going to develop the direct equity and bond side, alongside alternatives further, so we are going to build this into a full service discretionary offering. What we have got at Hawksmoor just needs a little tweak here and there. It is a matter of fine tuning the engine rather than changing the chassy,' Wood-Smith said.
'On the discretionary side our portfolios are currently only buying funds so we are going to widen out the asset classes we are buying,' he added.
Rising was formerly an investment director at Williams de Broë, and Christows prior to this. He decided to leave Williams de Broë in 2013 shortly after the completion of its takeover by Investec Wealth & Investment.
Hawksmoor chief executive John Crowley said Rising and Wood-Smith will focus on building the firm's presence and proposition in the direct private client space, which represents the third key growth area for the business alongside fund of funds and model portfolios.
'Hawksmoor is now known as a funds-only house. In terms of the bespoke private client side we are introducing a direct equity element to our managed portfolios. If you are going to develop that you have to have some credibility and certainly we are confident that we are able to demonstrate that with Jim Wood-Smith and his background.'
Jill Gill, also formerly of Investec Wealth & Investment, is also set to join Rising and Wood-Smith as a sales and marketing specialist to help drive growth in the direct private client arm.
Wood-Smith added that the prospect of playing a key role in the next stage of growth for Hawksmoor was a key attraction to the role.
