Richard Plackett

A graduate of Cambridge University, Richard Plackett launched his career in 1989 at 3i as a venture capitalist and small cap fund manager. After seven years, he moved to M&G where he began as head of the smaller companies desk and eventually took charge of the overall UK investment process. In 2002 Plackett joined Merrill Lynch (now BlackRock). As head of UK small and mid cap investment, he is responsible for the BlackRock UK Special Situations Fund. He implements a bottom up stock selection style and places emphasis on meeting with a company’s management directly. Plackett also seeks businesses with both strong market positions and balance sheets. A former international bridge player and author of a historical novel about the War of the Roses, he likes to relax by spending time with his two sons and going to the theatre.

The aim of the BlackRock UK Special Situations Fund is to achieve long-term capital growth for investors. The Fund invests primarily in the shares of companies incorporated or listed in the UK and will normally have an emphasis on small or medium sized companies. The Fund may also invest in collective investment schemes. Small and medium sized companies are those whose market capitalisation is lower than that of companies in the FTSE 100 Index at the time of the Fund's investment.
