Hires underline Brown Shipley's plans for growth

Brown Shipley has named Peter Stiles as the head of its Manchester office following a series of promotions and hires which underscore the group’s ‘ambitious’ growth plans, the company said.

The business has also strengthened its Birmingham team with the hire of Paul Hetherington from Coutts, who joins as a private banking senior manager.

Stiles has been with the group for 27 years, latterly as a private client director, and his promotion comes shortly after the Manchester-based firm promoted previous incumbent Julian Hardiman to the newly created role of head of private banking.

Hetherington joins with a remit to help ‘expand the bank’s client base in the counties surrounding Birmingham’.

Brown Shipley’s Birmingham office has a history of taking on Coutts staff. In 2011 it poached senior private client partner Anne Brookes and two private bankers to expand its presence in the city.

In December, Brookes was named as head of the office, while Charles Fotheringham was appointed head of its Edinburgh branch with the aim of building up its presence in the Scottish capital.

Brown Shipley said the reshuffle is part of an ‘exciting and ambitious’ plan to grow assets under management and Stiles added he had ‘ambitious goals’ for the Manchester office in 2013.

‘Peter’s appointment is a clear indication of the contribution he has made during his time at Brown Shipley. This should be an exciting year for us as we work towards our strategic objectives,’ Hardiman said.

Stiles will continue to run client money but will also have overall responsibility for the Manchester office’s investment management, banking and financial planning teams.

Brown Shipley have, in banking terms, had a long term growth strategy in Scotland for 3 years now but I fail to see how they can have the "ability to make a difference" if nobody knows who their banking team are!.

It seems to me that despite the credo that "personal service sits at the very heart of the relationship" banking is only supplementary to discretionary investment management which is clearly their principal focus. When are they going to appoint some genuine, experienced banking talent to the Edinburgh Office in order to get it up and running - or is it stumbling!. Without bankers you don't really have a bank.

Interesting to see they consider hiring someone after making so many redundancies just before Christmas.

Not sure of the strategy if any being deployed here.
