Leeds has positioned itself as one of the most important hubs for financial services in the north of England. Its long tradition of private banking, excellent transport links and central location has attracted many of the biggest names in wealth management. We profile the top 20 wealth managers in alphabetical order.
Richard Annis, Brewin Dolphin
Annis joined Brewin Dolphin in 1994 as a trainee investment manager. He became fully qualified in 1998, and was appointed to Divisional Director in 2010. Richard has day to day responsibility for portfolio management on behalf of private clients, charities and personal pension funds.
David Barstow, JM Finn & Co
Barstow is responsible for the Leeds Office of JM Finn & Co. He joined in 2005 and had previously been a Partner in the Harrogate firm of Cawood Smithie. His career started in Industry where he worked for ICI/AstraZeneca for over 20 years mostly in the agricultural and biotechnology sector as managing director of one of their businesses.
‘I’ve been in Leeds for 10 years and would recommend it as a place to do business. The fact is, we can do everything from Leeds that we do in London,’ he said. ‘We’ve really seen it grow recently because of its accessibility and for private clients you must be locally accessible to them.’
Elizabeth Beeby (nee Parfitt), Investec Wealth & Investment
Beeby is responsible for the day-to-day management of portfolios, encompassing private individual, private limited company, trust, charity and pension clients.
She has gained experience managing equity and collective accounts on a discretionary basis over the past 11 years and was initially a member of the Sheffield Discretionary Fund Management Department, which merged with the Leeds equivalent in 2007.
Robert Bramham, Brewin Dolphin
Bramham joined Brewin Dolphin’s Leeds office in 2009 as a Director and specialises in investment management. He has over 20 years’ experience in the financial industry with a career that has seen him work as a financial advisor, mortgage advisor and stockbroker for Barclays.
He joined Barclays Bank in 1979 and attained his professional banking qualifications in 1985. He subsequently qualified as a financial advisor and mortgage advisor but then moved to Barclays Stockbrokers to train as a stockbroker in 2000.
Aidan Butler, Newton Asset Management
Butler heads up the Leeds office, which was established in 1993 to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the regional private client market. ‘We saw an opportunity to expand the Newton Private Client business in the North and are looking to grow further from here,’ he said, ‘the clients in Yorkshire are a very broad range, from family groups and associated trusts and pensions, through to charities, local authorities and smaller company pension schemes.’
John Connor, Investec Wealth & Investment
Connor oversees a team of discretionary portfolio managers looking after Individuals, Trusts, Pension Funds, corporate accounts and Charities. He also contributes to the Group Investment Process through membership with all the major committees.
Michael Craven, Brewin Dolphin
Michael has been head of the Leeds office since 2007, he and his team manages portfolios for private clients, charities and pension funds. In the team he particularly specialises in charitable funds.
Martin Cuthbert, Barclays Wealth Leeds
Cuthbert is Regional Centre Head of Barclays Wealth Leeds and specialises in the structuring and management of wealth for High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth Individuals and their families. He has been with Barclays Wealth since August 2006.
Andrew Goodchild, Brown Shipley
Goodchild is Brown Shipley’s Divisional Investment Director and for more than 12 years has headed the Leeds office of the private bank, which has ties with the city stretching back more than a century.
Graduating from Leeds University with a degree in Economics and Econometrics, he began his career in stockbroking in 1986 and trained initially as an analyst. He joined Brown Shipley in 1998 and within the year was appointed Director in charge of the Leeds office, which today has more than £200m assets under management.
A fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, he played a key role in the development of Brown Shipley’s online service and works closely with the private bank’s Asset Allocation Committee. He is responsible for managing investments for charity, corporate and private clients in Yorkshire and across the UK.
Andrew Hackett, Investec Wealth & Investment
Hackett is a Senior Investment Director on the Leeds/Sheffield Discretionary Desk at Investec Wealth & Investment. He has over 11 years in the investment industry and has a Masters in International Financial Analysis, a law degree and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Securities Institute.
At the Leeds branch, he specialises in the construction and ongoing management of discretionary private Individual portfolios and as a member of the Group Collectives Committee, produces research and recommendations on the collective investment universe.
Simon Kaye, Investec Wealth & Investment
Kaye looks after clients and also manages the team in the Leeds office of Investec Wealth & Investment. He joined the company in 1988 and has managed clients investments since the early 1980s, which remains his principal role. The business in Leeds has grown significantly since its establishment under Simon’s direction.
Thomas Malloch, Redmayne Bentley
Malloch is an Investment Manager Redmayne-Bentley, where he has worked since 2006. An Economics graduate, Tom manages funds across a range of different mandates, taking a particular interest in smaller companies and fixed interest markets.
Simon Martin, Charles Stanley
Martin, head of the Leeds office of Charles Stanley, is another ex-Barclays employee, having worked at the Leeds and Teesside offices of Barclays Wealth as a Portfolio Manager responsible for more than £100m of discretionary money.
He started his career in June 1987 working for Penney Easton in London and in 1994 chose to take a break from the investment industry to study. After graduating with a MBA from Bradford University Management School, Martin joined Barclays Wealth.
In May 2008 Martin, together with Jonathan Baker, was offered the opportunity to set up the new Leeds office for Charles Stanley which he accepted.
Martin Payne, Brewin Dolphin
Payne has been in the investment management industry for 29 years. Having started his career in Nottingham, he moved to Leeds in 1986 to develop the private client business of a new office. He joined Brewin Dolphin in 1991 and was appointed a Director in 1994. He has lengthy experience in portfolio management with a particular expertise in the management of pension funds and SIPPs.
Henry Shires, Investec Wealth & Investment
Shires, a past Wealth Manager cover star, is a Senior Investment Director at Investec Wealth & Investment (former Rensburg Sheppards). He joined Rensburg Sheppards 14 years ago, having previously worked as an independent financial adviser and then as a regional manager at the IFA division of Lloyds Bank.
He is a Chartered Financial Planner and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Securities Institute. At the Leeds office he manages approximately £130m on behalf of private individuals, trusts, pension funds and charities and specialises in managing discretionary portfolios. By working alongside introducers and clients, Henry aims to provide an independent and bespoke service tailored to client’s individual needs.
David Shorrock, Brown Shipley
Shorrock is a Private Client Senior Investment Manager with more than a decade’s experience in the industry. A member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, he joined Brown Shipley in 2003 and manages private client portfolios together with high-value corporate and charitable accounts.
He is focused on building long-term relationships with financial advisers, solicitors and accountants in Yorkshire and has particularly strong connections in East Yorkshire and the North East. He has a special interest in alternative assets, including structured products.
Paul Smith, Lupton Fawcett
Smith is a Director in and head of the firms Asset Management Department, which deals with investment and financial planning issues for private clients, their trusts and pension funds. He has over 30 years’ experience in private banking, asset management and financial services, and is a Member of the Securities Institute.
Hugo Till, JM Finn
Till is a Senior Investment Manager and has been working in the Leeds office of JM Finn since 2004 ,managing investments for Private Clients, Trusts, Sipps and Charities.
‘It’s a vibrant place and I live in Yorkshire which is a nice place to be. We have the option to go to London with the good rail links. We have a have quite a large amount of clients from all over the place.’
Prior to joining JM Finn he worked as an investment manager with Cawood Smithie and then Brown Shipley in Harrogate and Leeds.
Richard Walker, Brown Shipley
Walker is a Private Client Director who has worked in Brown Shipley’s Leeds office for more than a decade, following an initial stint in the private bank’s Manchester office.
A fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment with more than 25 years’ investment management experience, he manages discretionary portfolios for high net worth individuals, trusts, pension funds and charities.
He is active in developing relationships with solicitors and accountants in Yorkshire and works closely with Brown Shipley’s pensions and financial planning teams. He works with clients in Yorkshire and across the UK.
James Whittington, Brewin Dolphin
Whittington joined Brewin Dolphin in September 2001 and became a Divisional Director in 2009. After five years working on the LIFFE trading floor in London, he returned to Yorkshire to take a position in Investment Management firm Capel-Cure Sharp in Huddersfield. He moved to central Leeds over a year later to work for Brown Shipley before joining Brewin Dolphin.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and manages portfolios for private clients, charities & pension funds.
