MPs step up RBS break-up campaign
by Sarah Miloudi on Aug 27, 2013 at 07:30
MPs are pushing harder for the break-up of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).
In its latest bid to divide the lender, the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards has urged that RBS is split in two, separating the good from the bad bits of the bank.
'It is important for all the options for [RBS'] future structure to be examined as a matter of urgency,' the Commission said in a letter published in the Financial Times.
An investigation into whether RBS should be broken up has already been ordered and the results will be published later this year.
However according to the FT, sources close to the situation believe the Treasury could stand in the way of RBS' split, despite the proposal being backed by former Bank of England governor Lord King, ex-Tory chancellor Lord Lawson and Andrew Tyrie, who chairs the Treasury Select Committee as well as the cross-party banking commission.
