A day in the life of...Butterfield Bank's Ashley Northgrave

A day in the life of...Butterfield Bank's Ashley Northgrave

Ashley Northgrave, investment manager at Butterfield Bank in Guernsey, give us a snapshot into his daily life.

My alarm goes off: 6:45am

I’m responsible for: £110 million

Worst part of my job: When I’m not playing golf

Best part of my job: Sitting down and talking to clients, potential clients and fund managers about investments and ideas.

After work: Usually golf or a swim in the sea (both unfortunately dependent on the weather)

I got the job: 1 March 2016

I’ve been in the role for: 18 months

How long is your commute to work? On a good day, with minimal traffic 20 minutes – and 11 to the golf course.

Tea or coffee? Coffee
Typical lunch choice? Usually a salad, I seem to have a conscience at lunchtime.

What are you reading at the moment? Exposure: Inside the Olympus Scandal, by Michael Woodford.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? A pizza from Café Del Mare at 3am.

What’s the biggest challenge you face day-to-day in your role? Balancing increased regulation with managing client money.

How do you see the wealth management industry in 10 years’ time? Hopefully more toward the old style of having a relationship with your client as opposed to talking to machines and being part of a production line.

What do you get up to out of the office?
Golf mainly, some cycling with the family, anything outdoors whenever possible.

You are hosting a dinner party this evening. Which three people would you invite and what are you cooking?
David Attenborough, Raymond E Feist and my father; all influential people in parts of my life.  I will be making a South African ostrich neck potjie.
