Coutts celebrate opening of Rwanda cricket ground

In April, the Coutts cricket team batted for 51 hours straight at the Kia Oval raising circa £70,000 for the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation. Now, the team has been out to Rwanda to see what all their efforts were for: the completed Gahanga Cricket Ground.

The Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation’s mission is to use cricket to promote reconciliation following the genocide. Christopher Shale, who sadly passed away in 2011, was pivotal in pioneering the project, and the foundation continues in his memory.

To mark the opening of the stadium, Coutts played in a tournament against teams from Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya U19s, Old Etonians, Grannies (a team of barristers), Christopher Shale (Surrey) XI and a team from Yorkshire Tea. Coutts made it to the final, but missed out on the plate to Kenya U19s.

Coutts UK CIO and cricket team member, Alan Higgins, told us that as well as playing in the tournament, they visited a refugee camp, took part in Umuganda which is the Rwanda day of cooperation to help lay the foundations of a new school and also organised a one off cricket match inviting local people and charity volunteers to play with them.
