Ex-SLI UK equities star David Cumming joins Aviva

David Cumming, the former head of UK equities at Standard Life Investments (SLI), is set to be reunited with his former colleague Euan Munro, CEO of Aviva Investors, joining as chief investment officer, equities.

Cumming (pictured) quit SLI just days after the firm agreed a deal to acquire Aberdeen Asset Management in March. He had been at the company since 1998 and also had prior stints at Morgan Grenfell Asset Management, Edinburgh Fund Managers and Royal London Mutual.

The move to Aviva sees him reunited with Munro, who worked on the Edinburgh-based fund manager’s flagship Gars strategy.

While at SLI Cummings' UK Recovery fund, presciently launched in March 2009, returned 364.2% in the period to the end of February 2017, smashing the FTSE All Share’s gain of 171.8% over the same timeframe.

Over the years has has built a reputation of being a staunch critic of excessive boardroom pay.

He previously gagged at Royal Dutch Shell’s takeover of BG Group, saying it was difficult to swallow, as it did not add value, and he also battled ‘golden handcuff’ plans at Xstrata around its Glencore takeover deal.
