Ex-Threadneedle chief Simon Davies named Square Mile chairman

Ex-Threadneedle chief Simon Davies named Square Mile chairman

Square Mile Investment Research has hired former Threadneedle chief executive Simon Davies as a founding investor and chairman.

Commenting on Davies' appointment, Richard Romer-Lee, managing director of the investment consultancy, said: 'Simon brings significant industry and leadership experience as well as a proven ability to lead, manage and grow successful businesses and he provides strong, focused governance.'

Davies, who also served as chief investment officer and chairman at Threadneedle retired from the firm in June 2012, after leading the company’s transformation from a small UK manager of in-house insurance assets to a top international asset manager.

He joined Threadneedle as chief investment officer in 1995, a year after the firm was formed through the merger of the investment operations of UK insurers Allied Dunbar and Eagle Star.

Under Davies' leadership Threadneedle saw assets under management rise from £22 billion to £68.8 billion with the firm managing mandates for individuals, pension funds, insurers and corporations around the world.

In a career spanning 30 years' career Davies has also held positions at Gartmore and NM Rothschild & Sons, and was more recently chairman of Cofunds and the Investment Management Association.

He currently serves as chairman of the JP Morgan Overseas Investment Trust, and a non-executive director of Grainger, and Old Mutual Wealth Management.
