Q&A with Greg Mahon, regional director, Rathbones, Chichester:

What is your typical client demographic?

This has changed over the last three years. We are seeing more entrepreneurial wealth from a younger generation, as well as younger clients with fully funded pensions. This sits alongside our historically more typical clients, who are either pre-retiring or just retired. The shift has come about as a result of brand awareness and our work with the IFA community.

What differentiates your location?

Locality to London, while still being very rural and with access to the coast.

What challenges are facing your area?

Lack of available housing stock has caused prices to rise and made entry to the housing market difficult. This is a familiar problem across the country but made worse in Sussex by the lack of larger conurbations.

What’s the best thing about living in your area?

Where to start... We have a national park, countryside, coast and good access to London and international airports. This region rivals the very best of Britain.

What’s a typical regional saying?

Chidester, bettermost, land of oak and iron. Translates: Chichester, superior, strong place to live.

What is your office motto?

We are ‘Rathbones Chichester’ not the ‘Chichester office’ of Rathbones.

Are you bullish or bearish?

We are bullish. Interest rates are at all-time lows, the global economy is growing, albeit slowly, and there are very few asset classes which represent value. We see equities giving investors both yield and the opportunity for growth in the longer term. There is no doubt that volatility will remain high for the foreseeable future, but a strong commitment to a balanced equity portfolio, augmented with some liquidity and alternative investment strategies, to flatten some of the volatility we are likely to see, remains our preferred route.
