Provident Financial chair Manjit Wolstenholme dies

Provident Financial executive chair Manjit Wolstenholme has died.

In a stock exchange announcement, the firm said 53-year-0ld Wolstenholme had passed away suddenly on 23 November.

'We are deeply shocked and saddened. The thoughts of everyone at Provident are with Manjit's family and friends, and we extend our deepest sympathies to them,' senior independent director Malcolm Le May said.

Wolstenholme, who joined the Provident board in 2007, trained as a chartered accountant with Coopers & Lybrand before making her name as co-head of investment banking at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.

Alongside her role at Provident, Wolstenholme also chaired housebuilder Cala Homes and was a senior independent director and audit committee chair of student housing group Unite.

She also served as a senior independent director at spread betting firm CMC Markets and publisher Future, stepping down from the former in May.

'It was a great privilege to know her personally and to work alongside her over the last few years. She has shown exceptional leadership in stepping up to the role of executive chairman over the last few months,' Le May added.

'Manjit was known and respected for her achievements and championing diversity in British business, and we would like to pay tribute to her contribution to the business landscape,'

The Provident board has appointed Le May as interim executive chairman.
