Ukip support surges in local elections

Nigel Farage's UK Independence Party has made strong gains in the local elections.

At 7:40 Ukip and the Labour party were showing strong gains in London, at the expense of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

Ukip had won 102 council seats across the UK, a win of 81 additional seats. Labour had won 1,280 seats, representing a net gain of 72 seats, and claimed control of two more councils, including Hammersmith and Fulham.

The Conservatives won 1,014 seats at this time, representing a loss of 87 seats, with the further loss of eight councils. The Liberal Democrats won 347 seats, a loss of 51 seats, and lost control of one council.

Seven councils across the UK had no overall control after the vote was split.

Early results from Sunderland showed Ukip had won a 24% share of the vote, up from zero previously. Labour also lost control of Thurrock council as a result of Ukip support.

Ukip also took 10 out of 21 seats contested in Rotherham.

'We are now in a four-party system,' Steve Crowther, chairman of Ukip, told BBC in response to the anti-Brussels party's results.

'We have been building for 20 years and we have reached a point where we have broken into the field, this is not a flash in the pan. People are seeing you get a result for your Ukip vote,' ,' he added.
