Norton leaves Quilter Cheviot after 33 years

Peter Norton has retired from Quilter Cheviot, where he was an executive director within the London-based investment management team.

Norton originally joined the firm in 1981, having begun his career at Grieveson Grant and becoming a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1977.

At Quilter, Norton established the London stockbroking desk and went on to advise private clients, trusts and pension funds.

During his time at the business, Norton saw it acquired by a succession of suitors, including Commercial Union in 1988, Morgan Stanley in 2000 and Citibank in 2006, before it was finally bought by private equity firm Bridgepoint in 2012.

In the same year Quilter & Co and Cheviot Asset Management received regulatory approval for their union, which created a group with combined assets under management of £14.2 billion. That has since grown to £15.8 billion, managed across 13 offices in the UK, Jersey and Ireland. Earlier this year the firm’s London branch was shortlisted in the Citywire Regional Star Awards 2014.

Norton’s responsibilities at Quilter Cheviot have been assumed by investment director Chris Jones. Jones, a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments, joined Quilter Cheviot in 1987 from Murray & Co, where he started his career in 1983.
