Overnight Markets: US stocks gain on hopeful signs in fiscal impasse

In Asia, shares oscillated between gains and losses on Thursday in afternoon trade as health care stocks gained while energy companies and materials producers fell.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 0.2% to 139 as of 1:18 p.m. in Tokyo. Japan’s Topix index added 0.7% after yesterday rising the most since 19 September. South Korea’s Kospi index was little changed after rising as much as 0.4%.
New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index gained 0.1%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 0.2%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index (HSI) dropped 0.8%, while the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.9%. Singapore’s Straits Times Index climbed 0.3%.
