Overnight Markets: Wall Street rises amid Nasdaq trade halt

Mineral stocks rallied with Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. surging 5.8%. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. added 3.3%. Barrick Gold Corp., the world’s biggest producer of the precious metal, gained 2.6% after Gold Fields Ltd. said it will pay $300 million for Barrick’s Granny Smith, Lawlers and Darlot gold mines in Western Australia.
In Asia, shares advanced on Friday in morning trade after reports from Europe to the US boosted confidence in the economic recovery and the yen weakened against the dollar.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index advanced 1.3 percent to 131.33 as of 9:48 a.m. in Hong Kong. Japan’s Topix index surged 2.3%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index jumped 1.2% and South Korea’s Kospi index advanced 1%. New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index rose 0.1%. Singapore’s Straits Times Index gained 0.3% and Taiwan’s Taiex increased 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.8% and China’s Shanghai Composite added 0.6%.
