Overnight Markets: Wall Street starts year with loss

In Asia, shares declined on Friday in morning trade after US equity gauges pulled back from records and a gauge of China’s non-manufacturing industries declined.

The MSCI Asia Pacific excluding Japan Index dropped 1.2% to 460 as of 9:59 a.m. in Hong Kong. China’s Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.6%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index decreased 1.6%. South Korea’s Kospi index slid 0.8% and Singapore’s Straits Times Index lost 0.4%.

Taiwan’s Taiex index declined 0.6%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped 0.7%, while New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index added 0.6%.
