Rangers bidder retreats on fan fury

Beleaguered Scottish football club Rangers has suffered another blow as the American bidder tipped to snap it up and save the side from administration withdrew his interest.

Bill Miller, the chairman of a Tennessee-based towing and recovery equipment company, said he had grown uncomfortable with the level of fan opposition to the bid and was concerned that Rangers' financial position was worse than he had feared.

Miller's decision to withdraw his interest comes after Octopus' Ticketus also decided to stand back from the Blue Knights consortium, which Henderson manager John Bennett (pictured) is part of.

Miller said had he pursued his bid, foreign ownership of the club would not have gone down well with its fan base.

'Preliminary information, discussions and analysis were, unfortunately, more optimistic than reality,' he added, as he announced his decision to withdraw his interest in the club.

Bill Miller: Don't be a chicken - just look at Mike Ashley's ownership of Newcastle. Only last year he was completely hated by the fans and almost forced to sell the club. Now he's a hero and the team are fighting for Champions League spaces. When you look at the Mickey Mouse Scottish League, you're going to (by default) finish first or second and likely to win trophies very early into your ownership. Go for it!
