When we carry out our bi-annual review of Citywire Selection we also highlight twenty star picks. This is our assessment of what we believe to be the very best investment opportunities given the market environment we face.

Current Opportunities

When we identify and follow fund manager talent, some of the best times to invest or indeed top up a holding is after a bit of a lull. An example is Ruffer Investment Company which had been treading water, but I believe its Japanese equity position, along with its capital preservation mindset, could well be in a sweet-spot.

Further examples in this camp are GLG Japan CoreAlpha and Ecclesiastical Amity International.  

The Ecclesiastical fund is managed by Robin Hepworth (pictured) and our analysis shows him to be one of the most consistent managers we track since launching fund manager ratings ten years ago.

He has however underperformed over the last couple of years due to low exposure to the US which has rallied strongly. He has an Asian bias and in the second half of last year was finding opportunities in small and mid cap names at attractive levels. There are also some Chinese holdings and although the country is facing its own set of challenges, the stockmarket is starting to pick up from a five year low which I believe will support a return to form.
