Microsoft founder Bill Gates is back at the top of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index after enjoying a $15.8 billion surge in his wealth in 2013.
Bill Gates: $78.2 billion (£47.5 billion)
Gates is once again the richest man on earth having lost the top spot in 2013. The Microsoft owner saw his wealth increase by $15.8 billion over the year, according to the index.
Carlos Slim: $72 billion
Gates replaced Carlos Slim, the owner of the largest phone operator in the Americas and Mexico’s richest man.
Amancio Ortega: $65.3 billion
Spain’s richest man, Amancio Ortega, is in third spot. Ortega owns 59% of Inditex, the world’s largest clothing retailer and parent of the Zara chain.
Warren Buffett: $60.3 billion
Warren Buffett retains his place in the top 10 despite recently warning his investment firm Berkshire Hathaway was on course to miss it investment targets for the first time in its 44-year history.
Ingvar Kamprad: $52.8 billion
Fans of flat pack furniture will not be surprised to see Ingvar Kamprad hold on to his place in the top 10. The Ikea owner remains well placed to prosper further from the expected recovery in the global economy.
Charles Koch: $50 billion
Charles Koch is one half of the most affluent sibling partnership in the world. Koch owns 42% of Kansas-based industrial firm Koch Industries where he serves as chairman and chief executive. In 2007 he shared some of his secrets to gaining a fortune with the world when he published a book ‘The Science of Success’.
David Koch: $50 billion
Meanwhile brother David, who also owns 42% of the firm and survived an airplane crash in 1991 in which 34 people died, is vice president at the firm. Koch is a major patron of the arts and has contributed to several charities including the American Natural History Museum.
Larry Ellison: $43.3 billion
Larry Ellison is the largest shareholder in Oracle and the eighth richest person in the world. His wide range of investments include the Hawaiian island Lanai.
Christy Walton: $39.1 billion
Christy Walton is the world’s richest woman and saw her fortune increase by $149.5 million in 2013. Walton is the widow of John Walton, the second son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.
Sheldon Adelson: $37.5 billion
Sheldon Adelson had a prosperous year and was the second biggest gainer in the index behind Gates after a $14.4 billion surge in his wealth. Adelson is gambling’s richest man, owning the biggest stake in Las Vegas Sands, the world’s largest casino company.
