The top ten lawyers every wealth manager needs to know

by David Campbell on Jun 25, 2010 at 08:30

He is known for his familiarity with international regulatory bodies and is reputedly in high demand on the international conference circuit for his global knowledge bank.

8. Charles Gothard - Speechly Bircham

Described as a cerebral figure, Gothard is best known for his academic approach to his work and encyclopedic understanding of international trust and tax planning.

He regularly contributes to both the STEP journal and the Oxford University Press World Trust Survey, as well as lecturing on trust law in the UK and overseas. He has worked closely in the past with the HM Revenue & Customs Special Compliance team and has acted as specialist adviser to trustees in the High Court and Court of Appeal.

9. Alison Paul - Turcan Connell

Paul specialises in trusts, tax and estate planning, particularly for entrepreneurs and company directors. Her areas of expertise include capital taxation, succession, trust law, charity law and asset protection.

She is editor of Tolley’s Charity Manual (Scottish Chapter), sits on the Law Society of Scotland’s Examination Board and is chair of STEP Scotland.

Paul says: ‘The origin of many investment trust companies speaks to the historic link between lawyers and wealth managers.

‘As stewards of their clients’ assets, long-term prudence – even at the expense of short-term opportunity – is crucial to each profession.’

10. Sophie Dworetzsky - Withers

Dworetzky is one of the leading team members, alongside company technical expert Jay Krause, behind the development of family limited partnerships to diversify trust holdings. She is also qualified in French law and works with asset managers in addition to private clients, structuring wrappers for global tax efficiency.

Her cross-border strength also extends to capital remittance and planning issues across multiple jurisdictions and global employee tax issues.
