Thurleigh analysts farmed out to broaden investment nous

by Drazen Jorgic on Oct 30, 2009 at 09:30

Thurleigh Investment Managers has devised a novel way to broaden the knowledge of its investment analysts by sending them on investment sabbaticals across the globe.

The wealth management firm has set up a scheme whereby its analysts spend time abroad or working in other industries to gain a better understanding of financial services and wider investments.

Thurleigh investment analyst Luca Serino is interning at CQS, a London-based hedge fund manager. Meanwhile, fellow analyst David Livingstone is set for a three-month internship at private equity firm Lunar Capital, based in Hong Kong.

Charles MacKinnon, co-founder and chief investment officer at Thurleigh, said the scheme will benefit the firm’s private clients. He said: ‘The best way you can service your clients is to have a broad experience. If you can find a way to train people with that breadth of experience, then that will make them much more able to understand where their clients are coming from.

‘Luca, for example, is experiencing in real detail how they manage risk at CQS. Likewise, David will be spending three months working for a top private equity business.

‘What we hope is that when they come back they will be able to bring to Thurleigh a much broader understanding of those industries.’

Livingstone added: ‘Finding out how [Asia’s] private equity markets work in more detail should be really interesting.’
